FOUR NATURE RESERVE AND PARKS
There are four nature reserve and parks located on the territory of Sjenica municipality. All these parks and reserves have been established by Serbian Government to protect rare and unique nature objects and complexes.
The most important and the most impressive nature reserve is “Uvac“. This nature reserve is located north-western from Sjenica, and it is located on the part of two municipalities: Sjenica and Nova Varoš. Most impressive part of this nature reserve is located 6 kilometers away from Sjenica. Uvac Special Nature Reserve is a heavenly place not only for tourists, but for the real connoisseurs of nature – speleologists and ornithologists as well. There live 104 species of birds. The most famous and the largest among them is the griffon vulture, rare and the largest bird living in Serbia. Of course, that is Beloglavi sup.
Second nature reserve is “Golija“. Golija is the first and the only Biosphere reserve in our country. The Government of the Republic of Serbia passed a regulation in 2001 which put the area of Golija Mountain under protection of UNESCO pronouncing it as the Nature Park and placing it in the first category of protection as a natural property of exceptional importance.
21 kilometer northern from Sjenica, nearly to the road Sjenica – Ivanjica, is located unique nature park – “Paljevine“. This area is protected because there is great natural habitat of rare type of fir – Abies alba pyramidalis. This fir have unique form discovered 1963-rd year, and it is the symbol of this strange area.
In the past, Pešter plateau was one big forest. It was 100.000 hectares wide. Very last fragment of that very big forest is located nearly the village of Ugao, and this nature park is known as “Gutavica” 11 hectares wide. This nature park is important because it show us that feel of Pešter as one big forest, because this area have very small surface under the forests today.
